At a distance of 12 km from Shillong Bus Stand, Elephant Falls is a stunning waterfalls located in the outskirts of Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya. It is one of the prominent waterfalls in Meghalaya and among the prime places to visit in Shillong.

The waterfall is located in Upper Shillong area within the Eastern Air Command of Indian Air Force. The Khasi tribe named it Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew, meaning Three Steps Waterfalls. Britishers named it Elephant Falls during their regime owing to the presence of an elephant-shaped rock on one side of the fall. However, the rock was destroyed due to an earthquake in 1897.
Located quite close to Shillong Peak, the Elephant Falls is a 3 tier waterfall. The first fall is very broad and is hidden among the trees. The second fall is quite domesticated and in the winters (and drier months) it looks inconsequential. The third fall is the tallest and most spectacular with crystal clear water falling over sharp rocks of myriad shapes. The waterfalls are flanked by lush greenery which adds to the charm of the place. This is a superb place for spending some time amidst the nature.
One need to navigate down a steep flight of 150 steps to reach the waterfall and these steps are troublesome for kids and aged people. There are benches around the first tier of the waterfall and the second one where one can sit and relax. Also, there are food stalls and lots of handicraft selling corners as well.

It is an around 80 km away from Shillong and located amidst a placid surrounding. Catfishes, Golden Carps and Silver Carp are best significant species are the found there.

Trekking in the calm and composed trails

Though I expected that trekking option might be available within the town, but he said we need to travel out of the main place for finding out trekking trails. We went to the David Scott trekking trail where we could feel the real charm of this ever-enthusiastic trip activity. It is considered to be most beautiful place for trekking in Meghalaya. The trek passes still low granite and sandstone cliffs found amidst rolling hills. A serpentine cleanest stream runs along with the trail.
