Hawa Mahal is the most visited and probably photographed landmark in the city. It is located in the heart of a marketplace and can easily be recognized by its towering structure and many window-like cut outs. Through history, Hawa Mahal, known as the Palace of Winds, allowed women to observe the happenings outside without being seen themselves. The City Palace is another popular attraction in the Pink City. It houses several collections of royal treasures within several ornate halls. The royal family of Jaipur also resides in part of the palace. Near the City Palace is Jantar Mantar Observatory. Undoubtedly the most distinct sight on the outskirts of the city is Amber Fort. Pronounced as Amer, the fort, built in sandstone contains within in smaller palaces or mahals including the ornamental Sheesh Mahal or the Palace of Mirrors. There is also a temple inside Amber Fort. If youre not in the mood to climb up the ramparts of the fort, you can opt to take an elephant ride or a jeep up. Both are easily available at the entrance of the fort. Other attractions in Jaipur include Jaigarh and Nahargarh Forts, Govindji Temple and Jal Mahal.
