Namgyal Monastery In Dharamshala

The Namgyal Monastery in Dharamshala is one of the most popular sites for Buddhist Studies. Also referred to as the Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies or the Namgyal Tantric College, it is the personal monastery of the Dalai Lama. It is the largest Tibetan monastery in the world, outside of Tibet. Located in McLeodGanj in Dharamshala, the monastery was founded in around 1564 in Lhasa, Tibet by the Third Dalai Lama, the monastery was named in order to honor Namgyälma, the female goddess of long life.
